  6. The Finishing Touches: Depending on the desired design, the pencils may be painted or lacquered for a polished look. A metal ferrule with an eraser is often attached to the top.

  7. Sharpening Up for Action: While some pencils come pre-sharpened, most rely on users to sharpen them. Sharpeners shave away wood to reveal fresh lead for writing.
